York Theatre Royal is proud of its Access All Areas programme, which supports young people facing barriers to participation in its activities. The programme is tailored to help each individual thrive by meeting them where they are.
As part of the Sweet Legacies project, all three Access All Areas groups were invited to create unique artistic works: a fusion of craft, theatre and dance, a mini musical and a devised theatre performance.
Our 8–11s group collaborated with a visual artist and a dancer to create a vibrant “scratch sharing” for their friends and families. Inspired by the themes of His Last Report and the legacy of the Rowntree family, they produced their own news articles scenes exploring the issues raised.
Our Wednesday 11-16s group made their voices heard by presenting their group leader with a petition to create a musical—and they made it happen! Working with a musical director and dancer, they crafted a high-energy performance blending original scenes with classic chocolate-themed songs and choreography.
Thursday’s Explore group dreamed up a modern twist on a golden-era tale. In their devised theatre piece, Wonka and Rowntree launched a contemporary competition full of wild chocolate-themed challenges from battling chocolate rivers to lifting the world’s heaviest chocolate bar, all revealing that the true prize is kindness.
Our Access All Areas participants continue to shine with creativity, imagination, and heart. We can’t wait to see what they dream up next!
