From 800,000-year-old footprints on a Norfolk beach to the changing fortunes of the early 21st Century, he offers a uniquely rich and kaleidoscopic vision of shared stories of people across Britain and Ireland – past and present. He will be in conversation with Professor Gweno Williams from the Norwegian Study Centre at the University of York, who is also Emeritus Professor of English at York St John.
Brian Groom is a journalist and author. During a successful 45-year career, he was a senior editor at the Financial Times and editor of Scotland on Sunday. His book Northerners: a History, from the Ice Age to the Present Day (2022), became a national bestseller. He is also the author of Made in Manchester: A People’s History of the City that Shaped the Modern World (2024). These Isles is published by HaperNorth in February 2026.
