A new community engagement project will see York Theatre Royal work with around 15 different community groups across the city to celebrate the Rowntree family legacy with a series of fun, free and inclusive activities and events.
Supported by a £113,225 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and £25,000 from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and £25,000 from the Garfield Weston Foundation, York Theatre Royal’s ‘Sweet Legacies’ programme runs throughout Summer 2025.
2025 marks 100 years since the death of Joseph Rowntree, the prominent Quaker philanthropist and social reformer who transformed the family’s York grocery business into Rowntree & Co, a leading confectionary manufacturer which made iconic treats like KitKats and Smarties. To celebrate this milestone, participants will be invited to explore any aspect of the Rowntree story that sparks their interest, in whichever art form they prefer – from music and dancing to theatre and storytelling, film, podcasts and more!
The ‘Sweet Legacies’ programme will focus on engaging with people from a variety of different groups including those who aren’t currently involved with York Theatre Royal. Plans are underway with a range of charities and community groups across the city including Theatre of Connections, Tang Hall Smart, and The Place.
The activities on offer include a new free 5-week writing group which kicks off this week at the Homestead Park Pavilion and invites writers of all levels to explore the rich history and stunning beauty of Rowntree Heritage as inspiration for their creative journey.
Over May half term (26 – 31 May), a fun family friendly bee-themed trail will also be taking place at the theatre – inviting people to come and hunt for the bees across the building! More details will be announced over the coming months on how local York people can get involved in the various events taking place.
The project runs alongside the staging of the theatre’s summer community production His Last Report which focuses on the life of York’s influential social reformer and philanthropist Seebohm Rowntree. The play will include volunteers in all areas – including cast, choir, wardrobe, stage management, front of house and photography – and will run in the Main House from 22 Jul to 03 Aug.
Lydia Crosland, Community Connector at York Theatre Royal said, “It’s a joy to launch a project that brings together such a diverse range of groups. Community is at the heart of our work at York Theatre Royal, and we’re incredibly proud of the collaborations that have made this possible. This project gives us a fantastic opportunity to expand our year-round community work, strengthen relationships, and reach even more people in meaningful ways. We’re excited to learn, grow, and ensure that what we offer truly resonates with the people of York.”
His Last Report is at York Theatre Royal from Tue 22 Jul to Sun 03 Aug.
