Takeover Festival is an exciting collaboration between York Theatre Royal and York St. John University. During this week-long festival final year Performance students will take over the theatre and work across all departments in the organisation.
For the 2026 Festival the Programming Team are inviting submissions from Professional Performance Artists or Companies to form part of the Festival Programme. There are two opportunities available, one in the Main House and one in the Studio Theatre.
Main House
Saturday 30th May 2026, evening Performance.
The Main House is a 750-seater end-on, proscenium arch space.
For the last night of the festival we are looking for work with a celebratory feel! We’re particularly keen to hear about adaptations of classic texts or existing titles which give a well known story a twist.
We can offer a guarantee of £800 vs a 70/30 split of Net Box Office in the Visiting Company’s favour.
Ticket Pricing between £15 and £20, with a student rate to be agreed.
Studio Theatre
Saturday 30th May 2026, two daytime performances.
The Studio Theatre is a 70-seater end-on space with a playing area of approximately 5mx5m.
For this theatre we are looking for work for younger audiences and families. As this booking will fall on the day of York Pride we’d be keen to see work which celebrates individuality and being yourself!
We can offer a guarantee of £400 vs a 70/30 split of Net Box Office in the Visiting Company’s Favour.
Ticket Pricing between £10 and £15, with a student rate to be agreed.
Technical Information
Both spaces will have a festival rig for the week so chosen acts will need to fit into that.
Neither space has a projector.
Chosen companies will be looked after by student technicians, supported by YTR Professionals.
The YTR Marketing Team will work alongside students to market shows, but chosen companies will be expected to undertake their own marketing to promote the shows.
To submit – please send a Tour Pack to: takeover.programming@yorktheatreroyal.co.uk by 27 October.
Please state in the subject line which theatre you are submitting work for.
