It’s an exciting time at York Theatre Royal, with the cast of The Psychic working their magic in rehearsals for Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson’s twisted new thriller.
We caught up with the cast to find out more about the show and what audiences can expect from this world premiere production.
What made you want to be a part of The Psychic?
Eileen: Both Andy and Jeremy, and then hearing that Rae was designing it, not to mention the brilliant Frances Barber!
Frances: I’m a big fan of Jeremy and Andy and it’s a great play.
Megan: This story is very close to my heart, having grown up in a showman community raised by powerhouse women like the ones on the show, I’m so honoured and proud to be helping this story come to life. I’m a big fan of Andy and Jeremy and knew this story was going to be a rollercoaster of thrills, magic and drama and I couldn’t wait to jump in.
Nikhita: A host of reasons. Firstly, how cool is it to work with the legends that are Andy and Jeremy! Secondly, what a script. What an honour to get to be a part of something so groundbreaking and magical. It’s the job every actor dreams of!
Jaz: The team, and most importantly the story.
Can you tell us about the character you play in the show?
Eileen: Sheila is a stage and TV mystic, a glittery connection to the other side.
Frances: She’s the original psychic and extremely scary!
Megan: I play Tara – she has a rough exterior, but is soft and sensitive inside carrying self-doubt and wounds from her past. She’s an underdog and surprises herself as much as the other characters.
Nikhita: Nisha is a glamourous diva, who thinks she knows everything, so she’s definitely in for a few surprises!
Dave: I play Robert Hamm, a radio host. He is a childish little man, looking for a story.
What are you looking forward to about coming to work in York?
Eileen: The crew we’ve met so far from York Theatre Royal are super, and I’m already looking forward to discovering the delights of York.
Frances: I love York, it’s beautiful and the people are so friendly. I’ve filmed there before, but never done theatre. I’m super excited!
Megan: I’m so excited to be in York, it’s so rich in history and has a sense of magic about it which I think ties perfectly with the show. I’m looking towards to attending some ghostly walks.
Nikhita: I’m looking forward to being back, I performed at York Theatre Royal previously in Noises Off. I love the city, it feels like Hogwarts!
Dave: I’m looking forward to getting out of London, some lovely, cobbled streets, the train museum, tearoom and the bar created by monks, Monk Brewery (possibly a dream!)
Charlie: I’m already here! I’m a proud Yorkshireman and grew up in Hull, but I’ve spent many days in York, so it feels like home to me.
What was your favourite past performance, and why?
Nikhita: I recently did The Comedy of Errors at the Yvonne Arnaud, which was my Shakespeare debut. Tackling that text was a mission, but I learnt so much by doing it. Plus, the cast were the best, it was a joy to get to work alongside them every night.
Dave: Playing Richard Hannay in 39 Steps, I loved the sheer physicality of the part.
Frances: I’ve just filmed my one woman show Musik, written by the Pet Shop Boys. It’s on in a cinema in York in April.
Charlie: Playing Ubbe in Jorvik, as it celebrates York’s Viking heritage!
Jaz: Snookered, at the Bush Theatre, as this was my first show.
What would you say audiences can expect from the show?
Nikhita: Expect the unexpected, be prepared to laugh, jump and cry!
Frances: To be very scared indeed!
Megan: Audiences can expect to be taken on a journey, testing their beliefs on what’s real or not. It’s going to be a wild ride.
Dave: They can expect to be wowed!
Jaz: Fear and edginess.
Eileen: A little edge, a little dark, a lot of fun and I already know you’ll love it!
Charlie: The unexpected.
The Psychic opens at York Theatre Royal on 6 May 2026, with previews from 29 April 2026, and runs until 23 May 2026.
