York Theatre Royal’s Youth Theatre bring Wendy & Peter Pan to the Main House Stage

More than 40 young performers will be taking to York Theatre Royal’s Main House stage this September for a very special production of Wendy & Peter Pan (03-05 Sep).

Aged between 8-19, the cast are made up entirely from York Theatre Royal’s Youth Theatre, with a further 8 young people supporting as backstage crew. This is the first time since 2019 that Youth Theatre have created a large-scale production in the Main House.

Written by Ella Hickson, the show is a magical retelling of JM Barrie’s Peter Pan which follows Wendy’s adventures in Neverland. Lydia Crosland, Head of Communities and Sophie-Jade Howell, Head of Youth Theatre at York Theatre are Co-Directing the show with Design by Kate Marshall and Lighting Design by Craig Kilmartin. The Composer and Sound Designer for the production is Joe Allen with music being co-created by York Theatre Royal’s Youth Theatre, Access All Areas group, and actor-musician students from Leeds Conservatoire. York Dance Space will also be supporting with Movement for the show.

Lydia Crosland, Head of Communities and Co-Director said, “This is such a wonderful opportunity to showcase the talent of our brilliant Youth Theatre community – both on stage and off! There is something truly special about co-creating a show with young people and I can’t wait to watch their creativity shine.”

Sophie-Jade Howell, Head of Youth Theatre and Co-Director said, “Ella Hickson’s take on the Peter Pan story is so beautiful and heartfelt. It’s got everything I love in an adventure – raucous pirate battles, a punk-rock fairy, and plenty of magic and mischief along the way. We have such a talented company of young performers and I know the whole process will be such a blast!”

York Theatre Royal’s Autumn Youth Theatre will then start again for another term from w/c 21 Sep with places available for children of all ages from 5-19. The weekly drama sessions take place at York Theatre Royal, York College and York St John University and offer young people a fun way to develop performance skills, improve their confidence and make new friends.

The show is made with support from The Feoffees of St Michael’s Spurriergate, York Youth Partnership Funding and The York Common Good Trust.

Wendy & Peter Pan is at York Theatre Royal from the 03 – 05 September.
