Your Theatre Journey Starts Here
Starting from as young as 5 years old, right up to 19, Youth Theatre offers great drama training from professional theatre practitioners and artists, theatre trips to see shows and a safe and welcoming space to make new friends.
Winner of the Little Viking’s Best Drama Class for two years running (2018 and 2019), it’s no surprise that our Youth Theatre is hugely popular with York families.

Young People's Development
We believe process and product are of equal importance and aim to create excellent pieces of theatre whilst teaching theatrical techniques alongside developing fundamental life skills such as teamwork, communication and self-confidence.
All You Need To Know
Youth Theatre sessions run alongside school terms, September to July in three 10/11 week blocks. Ages range for 5 – 19 years and are split into project groups: 5 – 7’s, 8 – 10’s, 11 – 15’s and 16 – 19’s. Each project group meets once a week during term time and is led by an experienced practitioner and assistant. We can also provide a mentor if a young person needs additional support.
Every group has the opportunity to perform at least once a year either in the Main House, Studio or another venue. Recently Youth Theatre performed at York Castle Museum and The Crescent. During production terms there will be additional rehearsals and dress/technical rehearsals for the participating group.
Each term every group has a theatre trip to a York Theatre Royal production, linked to the Youth Theatre’s work. There is often the opportunity to meet artists with Q&A sessions with visiting actors and acclaimed directors like Emma Rice. Youth Theatre members over 8 years also have an annual trip to our renowned pantomime.
Youth Theatre members are often invited to audition for professional productions, including our very own pantomime and summer shows, as well as associated work. Recent opportunities have included roles in Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre productions, An Inspector Calls and English Touring Opera’s Macbeth.
Each Youth Theatre group nominates a representative to join the Youth Theatre Forum. The Forum exists to give members a voice in the theatre – bringing issues for discussion, voting on new projects and interviewing new practitioners, Youth Theatre members play an active part in shaping our work.
How Much Will It Cost?
We offer a three-tier payment scheme, payable each term in advance:
£87 full fee
£66 low income families
£31.50 families in receipt of means-tested benefits.
Optional theatre trips are an additional £5 and are supervised by Youth Theatre staff.
If you do not fit into one of these categories but would like to request a reduced fee for other reasons please contact us and we will do our best to help.
We also offer a limited access fund for those young people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to become involved in Youth Theatre or for members who are experiencing short term financial challenges. This can also fund a mentor for an individual who might need one to one support.
