For the York Theatre Royal Youth Theatre Production of Wendy and Peter Pan we put a call out for any budding writers/critics within our Youth Theatre to review the show.
One of the junior critics selected was Heather, aged 9, who loves writing and going to the theatre. Enjoy reading Heather’s wonderful review below.
JM Barry’s Peter Pan has been reimagined by younger minds! The York Theatre Royal Youth Theatre has created this wonderful play, not just the adults either the kids have been a massive part of the production. It has been written by Ella Hickson and co-directed by Lydia Crossland, Head of Communities and Sophie-Jade Howell, Head of Youth Theatre.
The play is about two different types of families, Wendy and her brothers and Peter Pan and the lost boys. It starts with a sadness that affects Wendy and her brothers very much but then Peter Pan comes and brings happiness and adventure. There are lots of different adventures that are exciting, funny and will make you sit on the edge of your seat. Finally, they all come together to overpower someone bad! Both families end up being friends, and Wendy and her brothers know that things can’t be the same as they were, but they have been able to grow together to keep on going.
The sound, set, lighting, music and acting were amazing. I liked the set because it was double sided which meant they only had to turn it around for it to be in a different scene. The lighting was really effective in creating the images of the story for example with Captain Hook’s boat. The music filled you with excitement and keeps you wondering what will happen next. The Youth Theatre actors were brilliant and worked hard to support each other as a team, and looked like they were thoroughly enjoying themselves!
My favourite characters were Wendy, Peter Pan, Hook and Tinker Bell because they were all so brilliantly played! For example, when Wendy took charge and Peter wouldn’t listen to her it was really believable because he was so cheeky! Captain Hook was obviously really fearful of the crocodile, and Tinker Bell was always so full of emotion but happy to help!
I would not change a single thing it was really fun to watch and I loved it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves an exciting, adventurous and heartwarming story! It would be brilliant viewing for all ages. I give this fantastic production five stars!
