Join us for a special fundraiser with former Artistic Director Richard Digby Day

50 Years On: Richard Digby Day in Conversation

A former artistic director of York Theatre Royal, who is credited with discovering actors Hugh Grant and Ralph Fiennes, will talk about his life and work in the theatre at a fund-raising event in the Studio on October 5.

British stage director and international professor and lecturer Richard Digby Day was artistic director of the York theatre from 1971-76.

He also directed the Mystery Plays three times with the Settlement Players in York.

He has also been artistic director of Bournemouth Theatre Company, New Shakespeare Company at Regents Park Open Air Theatre, Welsh National Theatre Company, Nottingham Playhouse and Northcott Theatre, Exeter.

He is particularly well-known for his work in classical theatre, notably the plays of William Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw. He is Vice President of the Shaw Society, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and has staged more productions of Shaw’s work than any other living director. He is also noted for his productions of Stephen Sondheim musicals.

His work has been seen in the West End and on tour extensively throughout the UK, Canada, Denmark, and Ireland.

He has worked with many of the theatre greats including Judi Dench and Ian McKellen. A contemporary of Ian McKellen, the two began their professional careers working on many of the same productions with Digby Day serving as assistant director.

He has taught and lectured in the UK and North America.

York Theatre Royal Creative Director Juliet Forster will host the conversation.

The event is to raise funds for the theatre to support ongoing work. Tickets are £20, plus an optional additional donation to York Theatre Royal and are bookable via the website or at our Box Office.
