For the York Theatre Royal Youth Theatre Production of Wendy and Peter Pan we put a call out for any budding writers/critics within our Youth Theatre to review the show.
One of the junior critics selected was Rowan, aged 9, who regularly writes for his school newspaper. Enjoy reading Rowan’s fantastic review below.
Wendy and Peter Pan, written by Ella Hickson and directed by Sophie-Jade Howell and Lydia Crosland, played at the York Theatre Royal on the Main Stage for three nights, starting on September 3. The cast, ages eight to 19, was made up from York Theatre Royal’s Youth Theatre.
The story follows Michael, John, Tom and Wendy Darling and their adventures in Neverland. In addition to the three classic siblings, Tom Darling, a new addition, provides the main reason why Wendy goes to Neverland. She goes looking for him in Neverland with Peter Pan and the Lost Boys.
The strong and very funny cast—particularly Harry’s Peter Pan—really brought the magical show to life. Peter’s gymnastics and jumping, in particular, were amazing to watch. Kate Marshall’s sets added immensely to the show, and her costumes were well-tailored for each person; they brought out each character’s personality.
Every minute of the show was wonderful. The only bad thing was how small the ice cream tubs were. (And the flat spoons didn’t pick up the ice cream well.)
All humans, aged eight-plus, would love this production. Therefore: five stars.
