Q&A with Maria Gray for Around The World In 80 Days-Ish

Ahead of our new show Around The World In 80 Days-Ish! opening this month, our Press Officer Steve Pratt caught up with Maria Gray who will be playing Nellie Bly in the show to find out more about some of her favourite places to visit around the world and more…

Do you like travelling or are you a stay-at-home person?

I love travelling.

Where do you call home?

Literally where my heart is. Home is where you feel comfortable. Put me anywhere where my family is.

Best place you’ve visited

Italy – the food, the landscape. It’s slightly bigger than the UK but so much more diverse. Hot and cold. My husband is half-Italian.

Worst place you’ve visited

Malaysia. It’s very humid. There are big cities with big developments around the beaches.

Place (town, country, planet) you’d most like to visit

I’d love to go to South America. I’ve always wanted to visit the Amazon rain forest. I’d love to see nature that you can’t find anywhere else.

Best way to travel – train, plane, automobile or cycle

I like travelling by bike as its best for the environment and you get to see and experience lots of the places you are in,

What languages do you speak?

Italian

Have you worked abroad?

Yes in Italy, France, Switzerland and Germany

Do you have any Yorkshire connections?

I met my husband here in York. I’ve worked lots up here and now live here.

On the subject of Around the World in 80 Days-ish:

Have  you read the Jules Verne book?

Yes.

Who do you play in the York adaptation and what’s their role in the story?

Nellie Bly. She is a journalist who travelled around the world in real life.

The show is circus-themed, so what circus skills do you possess or are learning?

Aerial hoop, acrobatics, aerial silks, dance …I can juggle a bit and dabble in poi (performance art).
