Chekhov’s celebrated masterpiece

“But it’s the lake that draws me here… like a seagull.”

One summer’s evening on a makeshift stage by a lake, a bold new play is performed. For the assembled audience of family and friends, the play’s first and only performance sets off a series of events that will alter the course of all their lives, forever.

York Settlement Community Players (YSCP), celebrating their centenary in the city, return to York Theatre Royal’s intimate Studio with Anton Chekhov’s celebrated masterpiece, The Seagull.

A story about unrequited love, the generation gap, and how life can turn on a kopek, this raw tragicomedy heralded the birth of modern theatre. It’s poignant and sometimes absurd playfulness is echoed in Michael Frayn’s lively translation.

Directed by Helen Wilson (Uncle VanyaThe Cherry OrchardThree Sisters), this production will complete YSCP and Helen’s ten year project to stage all four of Chekhov’s major plays in York.
