The setting is the sumptuous stateroom of the York Mansion House, where awaits Captain Jack with his romantic endeavours to capture the heart of Miss Lydia Languish, despite the verbal gaffs of Lydia’s Aunt, the infamous Mrs Malaprop.
The Rivals, R B Sheridan’s magnificent play of 1775, is a reinvigorated and innovative performance by The University of York’s Drama Society, designed to capture the entertainment and society of the elegant pleasure seekers of the eighteenth century. The Georgian playhouse was a place of lively chatter and excitement, and to set the scene on this theatrical experience Dr. Chloe Wigston Smith (University of York) will give a short introduction.
