Gilbert & Sullivan's The Gondoliers
Set in Venice and the ‘Kingdom of Barataria’ – “an island fair that lies in a Southern sea” – The Gondoliers is full of visual and musical colour, wonderful melodies and lively dances. Gilbert’s libretto is as witty as ever on the subjects of republicanism and equality, and Sullivan’s music sparkles with warmth and good humour, with outstanding numbers such as Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes, A Regular Royal Queen, When a Merry Maiden Marries and famous Cachucha.
The Gondoliers was first performed in 1889 and was an instant success – so much so that it received the honour of a private performance in 1891 in Windsor Castle in the presence of Queen Victoria.
