Hello And Goodbye

This is 57A Valley Road, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Even in darkness you can tell that this place needs a broom. A single electric light buzzes over the kitchen table and Johnnie is being visited by his sister, Hester, after a very long absence.

Yes, says Johnnie; he and Daddy are getting along well enough but, no, she must not talk to him because he’s asleep in the next room. Tough, says Hester, there’s a late train leaving for Johannesburg and she’s taking it, along with her share of the loot.

From Tony Award-winning playwright Athol Fugard, York Theatre Royal presents a biting yet beautiful parable. Hello and Goodbye is a tense meditation on family, selfishness and redemption.

Don’t miss the post show Q&A following the 7.45pm performance on Wednesday 27 November.
