the international centre for arts and narrative

ICAN is a collaborative project between York Theatre Royal and York St John University exploring the concept of narrative and its influence on our lives. We host a variety of talks, facilitate research and run workshops relating to this topic, committed to a diverse exploration of the concept. We aim to demonstrate the effect that art has on our lives, to show its importance and practical use. As Clifford Geertz states, “culture is simply the ensemble of stories we tell ourselves about ourselves”; through exploring narrative we can explore the cultures we are part of and our identities within them.

To find out more about ICAN, please contact us or follow us on Facebook and Twitter for regular updates.

iCAN Workshops

We run free arts workshops on Thursdays in the De Grey Rooms by the York Theatre Royal, available for primary and secondary schools, and community groups. For more information and to book click here.

Participants work with different professional artists exploring how narrative can be used in different art forms to discuss abstract concepts and ideas, using stories such as Tiddy Mun and Oisín, Niamh and Tír na nÓg as a focus.

iCAN is currently taking a period of reflection and evaluation. We will post further details about when the project is back live.
