York Theatre Royal win at RIBA Awards and nominated for a York Design Award 2017

The £6m redevelopment of York Theatre Royal to create a building fit for the 21st century audience has won two highly-coveted awards in the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Yorkshire Awards 2017.

We were among nine buildings to receive a RIBA Yorkshire Award and also took the RIBA Yorkshire Client of the Year 2017 award with the project designers De Matos Ryan Architects.

Regional winners will now be considered for a RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence, which is being announced on June 22. The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year will be drawn from the national award-winning buildings later in the year.

Chief Executive Liz Wilson said: “We’re very pleased to be honoured with a RIBA Yorkshire Award recognising the planning and hard work that went into a project to create a building that meets the needs of modern audiences.”

We are also delighted to be nominated for The Press People’s Award in the York Design Awards. Each year, the York Design Awards aim to recognise and celebrate the best new buildings, restoration projects or public spaces in York. Judges will choose winners in several categories, with the winners being announced at an awards ceremony at York Racecourse on June 26.

“The Press People’s Award is a very important category,” says Janet Hopton, chair of the York Design Awards committee. “The judges have their own view about what constitutes great design. But it is the people of York who will have to live with these buildings. So your opinion really matters.”

This award is entirely in the hands of you. Voting closes on Wednesday June 7 and you can vote here: www.yorkpress.co.uk/features/designawards/
