Dr Watson gets a moustache trim at York barbers

Elexi Walker, currently playing Dr John Watson in Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of the Baskervilles at York Theatre Royal opposite David Leonard as Sherlock, visited a vintage gentlemen’s barber shop in York for a routine trim of her splendid handlebar moustache on Tuesday.

John Hughes, owner of Cads of Micklegate, took up his cut-throat razor and homemade shaving cream to perform the task. He then applied extra strong beeswax to keep the moustache firmly in place in time for Elexi’s show call for the evening’s performance.

Elexi said:

“I have to get the tache trimmed twice a week – it’s incredible how quickly it grows back. Normally one of the backstage crew will help or I ask David [Leonard] to do it, but after an unfortunate drooping incident in the second act I decided to go to a professional.

“I can’t wait to shave it off when the run finishes. It’s really tickly in my nostrils.”

Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of the Baskervilles, performed by a cast of six actor-musicians and directed by Damian Cruden, ends its run on Saturday 27 August after receiving unanimously glowing responses from audiences. Performances this week are at 7pm with 2.30pm matinees (see yorktheatreroyal.co.uk for a full schedule). Tickets are priced £24 - £10 (£1.50 transaction fee per booking) from the York Theatre Royal Box Office in person, by phone on 01904 623568 or securely online at yorktheatreroyal.co.uk.
