The Season Ticket: Next Fixture at York Theatre Royal

The Season Ticket: Next Fixture at York Theatre Royal

Following the critical success of their recent world premiere of The Machine Stops, Pilot Theatre will be joining forces with the acclaimed Northern Stage to visit York Theatre Royal from Wednesday 12 – Saturday 15 October for the stage premiere of The Season Ticket.  Lee Mattinson’s adaptation of Jonathan Tulloch's award-winning novel (which inspired the hit British Film Purely Belter) explores love, friendship, hardship and the priceless currency of hope.

Set in the North-East, the play tells the story of friendship, family and football by following two young lads from the wrong side of the tracks as they try to raise enough money to buy a season ticket for their beloved Newcastle United.

Everyone needs a dream. For Gerry and Sewell, it’s watching their beloved Newcastle United play for a whole season. To get into the sacred St James’ Park where Gazza once graced the field of dreams, Shearer smashed a total of two hundred and six goals, where Kev was King and Sir Bobby was a god, they only need one thing: a season ticket.

In a world of payday loans and cash-on-credit, how easy is it to make a cool grand? Can you sell ‘magic pennies’ for a pound on the streets of the city? Gerry and Sewell try every trick in the book but find that making money is much more complicated than avoiding school. Or home.

Directed by Pilot Theatre’s Associate Director Katie Posner, the play will feature in its excellent cast Victoria Elliott (Denise in the award winning BBC series Hebburn and Get Carter, Northern Stage), Joe Caffrey (original cast member of the Olivier award winning West End hit musical Billy Elliot and Gary Barlow’s new musical The Girls), Niek Versteeg (Wolf Blood, CBBC) , Kevin Wathen (Get Carter, Northern Stage and the musical Billy Elliott), Laila Zaidi (West Side Story, Kilworth House) and Will Graham (Tracey Beaker Returns, BBC).

Director Katie Posner said :

I believe the greatest gift we as a society can offer our young people is hope. A belief that their can be as bright as they can imagine. However, like the fortunes of the football team our story revolves around, sometimes these dreams are checked by the harshness of reality.

The Season Ticket is based on a novel about a pair of boys who become men as our tale unfolds. Set in Gateshead it explores the forgotten voices of two young people and how their love of Newcastle United offers them a sense of hope and belonging that is missing in their lives.

Tickets are on sale now priced £11 - £29 (£1.50 transaction fee per booking) from the York Theatre Royal box office in person, by phone on 01904 623568 or securely online at yorktheatreroyal.co.uk.
