Kids’ auditions for first panto in refurbished theatre

Kids’ auditions for first panto in refurbished theatre

York Theatre Royal is searching for the panto stars of the future to join the cast of Cinderella, the first pantomime on the York Theatre Royal stage in two years. Budding performers aged 8 to 11 and under five feet tall are invited to the open auditions on Saturday 17 September.

The creative team would like to cast enthusiastic and active youngsters with acting, singing and dancing talent to take part in this Christmas’s production of the world’s most famous pantomime. The kids will share a stage with the UK’s longest-running dame Berwick Kaler, here in his 38th outing, and the rest of the beloved panto team.

Young people who can make a strong commitment to the rehearsals and performance of this year’s pantomime are encouraged to audition. Rehearsals will start in November and will mainly take place on evenings and weekends.

Two teams of young people will perform alternate shows between Thursday 8 December 2016 and Saturday 28 January 2017, which will include some midweek matinees during term time. There are no performances on Sundays, Christmas Day or New Year’s Day, but anyone interested in taking part must be available for all other shows.

Artistic Director Damian Cruden said:

Last year we decided not to invite younger babbies to take part in the panto as we were at the Signal Box Theatre, a new space with a set that moved around constantly – it would have been a bit too dangerous for them. But now’s the chance for the 8- to 11-year-old panto fans to audition to get on our stage and be the first panto kids in the newly refurbished theatre.

Auditions will take place on Saturday 17 September in the Studio at York Theatre Royal. Those with surnames A to K need to register in the upper foyer at 9.30am then take part in a 10am–11am group audition. Those with surnames L to Z should register in the upper foyer at 11.30am; their audition will take place from 12pm to 1pm.

There is an extra audition slot on Saturday afternoon from 2.30pm to 3.30pm (registration at 2pm in the upper foyer) for members of York Theatre Royal's Youth Theatre and anyone else who is unable to make the first two sessions.

Those auditioning will need to bring a photograph of themselves, wear appropriate clothing and bring footwear to run and dance in – soft shoes such as plimsolls or trainers are recommended. As well as acting there will be dancing and singing. There is no need to contact the theatre in advance of the auditions; those auditioning will be able to register on the day. Trained chaperones will be present, so you can drop your children off and collect them afterwards.

Tickets are on sale now for Cinderella, priced at £14 to £33.50 (£1.50 transaction fee per booking) from York Theatre Royal Box Office on 01904 623568, in person, or online at yorktheatreroyal.co.uk.
