#ChipShopTheMusical: UK grime, Yorkshire brass and fish & chips, all in your local chippy Wackers on Gillygate

#ChipShopTheMusical: UK grime, Yorkshire brass and fish & chips, all in your local chippy Wackers on Gillygate

When shy South Yorkshire teenager Ayla blags a job in her local chippie, her secret dreams of a grime music career seem more out of reach than ever. It doesn’t help that her boss, Gram, is a cynical, brass band-loving bloke who’s falling out of step with the world as it changes around him. On the surface they have nothing in common, but can they come together and sort their lives – and the shop – out, before business and personal pressures force a closure?

The show stars Remmie Milner as wannabe MC, Ayla (Plastic Figurines, Box of Tricks, National Tour; The Piper, Oxford Playhouse; Romeo and Juliet, Custom Practice, National Tour; I Started a Fire, Arcola Theatre; Don’t Tell the Kids, Contact Theatre; Melody Loses Her Mojo, 20 Stories High and Liverpool Playhouse) and Darren Southworth as brass-loving Gram (Cox & Box, Mrs Bouncers Legacy, Stephen Joseph Theatre; The Bengal Lily, Manchester Royal Exchange Studio; Lip Service – Best Bits, Lip Service Theatre; The BFG, Octagon Theatre Bolton).

Emma Hill, writer, lead artist and co-producer of #ChipShoptheMusical has strong connections to Yorkshire:

I spent all my school holidays in Yorkshire with my Mum’s family as a child. I also lived in Yorkshire when I was a teenager and as an adult. I love Yorkshire and this show has Yorkshire at its heart. I am delighted to be bringing this show to share with Yorkshire audiences.

#ChipShoptheMusical is directed by Ben Occhipinti and features a unique blend of brass music (composed by Michael Betteridge), grime music (produced by Owly Beats) and further incredible artistic support from BBC Radio 1 Annie Mac’s artist to watch in 2016, Coco, and DJ Jo Kira (Radar Radio, London; ESS, part of iHeart Radio, NYC; All Star FM, and UK Mondo), alongside the award-winning championship brass band, Wingates.

The show is choreographed by South Yorkshire breakdancer Nathan Geering (Breakin Convention, Sadler Wells; Bright in the Corner, Ushutu, regional tour; Kathakbox, Sonia Sabri Company, nominated for the London Dance Award) and designed by Ryan Dawson Laight (Ham and Passion, De Neda Dance Theatre, Blue Elephant Theatre; Drunk, Bridewell Theatre; Henry V, Creation Theatre; HMS Pinafore, The Union Theatre).

Funded by Arts Council England, Yorkshire Festival, and Seafish – the authority on seafood – this is a unique and uplifting play about unlikely friendships, mismatched music… and chips.

#ChipShoptheMusical runs from Wednesday 1 to Friday 3 June with performances at 6pm and 8pm at Wackers, 45-49 Gillygate, York.  Tickets are on sale now priced at £16.50, which includes a fish & chip supper (£1.50 transaction fee per booking) from the York Theatre Royal Box Office in person, by phone on 01904 623568 or securely online at yorktheatreroyal.co.uk.
