Birmingham Royal Ballet return to York Theatre Royal

Birmingham Royal Ballet return to York Theatre Royal

York Theatre Royal is pleased to welcome Birmingham Royal Ballet back to its stage on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 May for the first time since 2013.  The company will be performing an illuminating mix of works that showcase the range and beauty of ballets inspired by William Shakespeare in honour of the 400 year anniversary of the bard’s death.

The programme begins with Wink, a brand new piece of work by Jessica Lang which captures the poetry of Shakespeare’s sonnets in a stunning one-act ballet composed by Jakub Ciupinski.  There then follows a series of excerpts from some of the best-loved ballets including the romantic balcony pas de deux from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, the pas de deux from Mendelssohn’s The Dream and the fiery fight pas de deux from Scarlatti’s The Taming of the Shrew

The Moor’s Pavane by Purcell concludes the performance; distilling the passion and drama of Othello into a thrilling, one-act tragedy which is tightly focussed on four characters and their jealousies.

The thrilling midscale tour programme showcases the versatility of Birmingham Royal Ballet company’s world-class dancers and features live accompaniment by the acclaimed Royal Ballet Sinfonia.

Birmingham Royal Ballet will perform at 7.30pm on Friday 13 May and 2.30pm and 7.30pm on Saturday 14 May. Tickets are on sale now priced £26.50 - £10 (£1.50 transaction fee per booking) in person at York Theatre Royal Box Office, by phone on 01904 623568 or securely online at yorktheatreroyal.co.uk.
