Details of the next TakeOver festival 2017 and how to get involved will be released over the coming few weeks. However, the festival will be taking place October 23 - 28.

Click here for the TakeOver Festival website, which has details of the last 2016 festival's performances.

Sorry but we are currently experiencing difficulties with our website.

The 2016 festival team's mission statement was as follows:

TakeOver Festival 2016 is celebrating its homecoming to the newly renovated York Theatre Royal by inviting audiences of all ages to its fresh and innovative multi-arts festival. This year’s unique programmme centres on the ideas of returning to one’s roots, new beginnings and how Home intertwines itself within our everyday life. Our Festival welcomes the inquisitive, the adventurous and the imaginative.

York Theatre Royal launched the UK’s first TakeOver Festival back in 2009. It was set up to be an annual festival run entirely by 12- to 26-year-olds who, with support from York Theatre Royal staff, would programme, prepare and produce a festival of theatre and events. In the last six years, more than 700 young people have been involved in running brilliant and well-received festivals.

The 2016 TakeOver Festival was organised by the following team of 12- to 26-year-olds:

be spectactive!

TakeOver Festival is supported by Be SpectACTive!, a European project focused on active spectatorship and audience development across contemporary performing arts. Be SpectACTive’s members besides York Theatre Royal include European festivals, theatres, universities and research centres. The project encourages dialogue through an exchange among professionals, artists and audiences all across Europe, and includes international conferences, a programme of festivals and events alongside artistic residencies for artists in the partner organisations. TakeOver Festival forms part of York Theatre Royal’s Be SpectACTive! programme of events.
