Same Same Different was commissioned by Eclipse Theatre as one of their 2017 Slate MAKE commissions which supports Black* artists living in the North of England to create new work. The play is inspired by Naomi’s own experiences as a Trans-racial adoptee, being adopted from Hong Kong in the 1980s into a White British family. This new hour-long verbatim play gives adoptees from all over the world the opportunity to share their adoption story in their own words and reveal what it’s like to grow up in a family and community who might look very different to themselves.
Rather than focusing on the adoption process the play explores what life is like as an adoptee and what happens after the “happy ending” of going to live with your “forever family”. The focus of the piece is what the contributors perceive as the similarities and differences between themselves and their family members and how both nature and nurture influence identity.
*To Eclipse, Black includes anyone who is marginalized for their race or ethnicity.
Show length 60 minutes followed by a 25 minute ‘ost show discussion with the creative team, adoptees and invited guest speakers.
