UK-born Marjorie Oludhe Macgoye arrived in Kenya as a lay missionary at the height of the Mau Mau rebellion. She wrote about ordinary people in the context of the history of modern Kenya – exploring relationships between different ethnic groups, the legacy of colonialism, political corruption, the disadvantaged status of women, lives of the urban poor and, in the 1990s, the effects of the HIV/Aids crisis. This talk, by Dr Sarah Lawson Welsh from York St John University, will celebrate the life and work of Macgoye.
