When young, naive soldier José falls in love with fiery gypsy Carmen, he abandons his beloved Michaela and deserts his military duties, only to lose her love to a glamorous bullfighter. In a fit of rage and jealousy, José makes a decision he can never take back.
Carmen is the one of the most famous of all operas and in its exciting new production, York Opera, Yorkshire’s leading amateur opera company, will bring to the stage this story of love and betrayal set in nineteenth century Spain. Sung in English and supported by a full orchestra, York Opera’s principals and chorus will do full justice to Georges Bizet’s sumptuous music, the high spots of which are Carmen’s Habanera, Escamillo’s Toreador’s Song and the March Of The Toreadors.
