As the audience enters York’s Studio Theatre for Rapunzel, the three actors are preening themselves in mirrors, applying make-up, striking poses and asking for help from the audience.

Rapunzel’s hair has grown long enough to reach the ground so she cuts it off. Why? “It was weighing me down,” is the exasperated response and, she adds, it takes so much time to wash and plait. So runs the humour in this clever and playful adaptation from writer Mike Kenny and the tutti frutti company. Rapunzel’s tower is built in front of our eyes with simple, yet powerful theatricality, understated light and sound, and some inspiring choreography. Yes, the tower is built but only in our imaginations and we must imagine how high it is after each spurt of building - by Rapunzel’s nan.

tutti frutti aims ‘to delight children’ and their production of Mike Kenny’s Rapunzel is most certainly delightful. The classic tale is told in a vibrant and whimsical style. Kenny introduces us to Rapunzel when she is a hairless baby and we watch her as she comes of age, privy to all of her dreams, angst and confusion.

Rapunzel never goes out, using that old excuse that she’s washing her hair. But she means it. It takes a very long time as she has very long hair that gets longer and longer and longer as the play progresses.

In our house when the three year old doesn’t fidget it generally means that he is enjoying himself – so the fact he sat through the tutti frutti performance of Rapunzel and barely uttered a word shows he was having fun.

The element of storytelling is a moment enriched in gaze and wonderment. The story of Rapunzel at the Theatre Royal was one such moment. The majority of the audience, boxed in a square style surely wanted this experience. The child-like nature of the play burst through the seams with a carefree spin on modern life. This could be argued as a distinct bonus but would it be the exact type?

tutti frutti Theatre Company are marking their 21st birthday with a new adaptation by Mike Kenny of Rapunzel. Mike Kenny has gone from delivering his adaptation of the York Mystery Plays with over a thousand players to a three hander to tell the story of Rapunzel.
tutti frutti celebrates its 21st birthday with York Theatre Royal by commissioning a fabulous new playful production of Rapunzel; a story about a girl who is taken away from what she knows and protected from all the things that she loves.
Placed high-up in a tower above the world and faced with the challenge of growing-up, she is found alone, dreaming...
The sun goes up
The moon goes down
The world keeps turning
Round and round.
The moon comes up
The sun goes down
Can things that are lost
Ever be found?
1 year, 2 years, the girl gets older
The summers hot, the winters colder
3 years, 4 years, her tower stands straight
The girl is dreaming, and still she waits…..
5 years, 6 years, the years go by
She's still alone, she wonders why?......
Told in an inventive, visual and physical style with live music and magical design, Rapunzel is a delightful new production for children about the curiosity and joys of growing up, risk taking and discovering who you are.
