This family-friendly adventure begins with a pre-show quest in which audience members are invited backstage to explore a chivalric world created in the dark recesses usually inhabited only by technicians and stage managers.

There are lots of boxes 11-year-old Sam and I wanted to have ticked though – magic, sword fighting and knights, romance and excitement. This production did not disappoint.

The entire building – including the stage – is transformed into a quest cum treasure hunt area in which families (with a little bit of help from the friendly staff) can search for clues to solve a riddle which comes in handy at the end of the play.

However, the play still has to be the big draw here, no matter what the “Experience” around it is, and Mike Kenny’s quest is to continue his run of summer successes after The Railway Children, The Wind In The Willows and the York Mystery Plays.

The production’s message of finding your courage and sticking to it - played out through Arthur’s transformation - is enough to inspire anyone to chivalry.

In these times of recession, it is most refreshing that families are being encouraged to spend the day at a completely transformed York Theatre Royal for no charge whatsoever. A Legend of Arthur Experience has been lovingly created; the patio has been turned into a jousting Tilt Yard with fun activities including stocks and sponges, Birds of Prey during the day and large games, and areas of the theatre normally out of bounds have been opened up to explore and enjoy ( such as The Lake and The Dungeon ). Hats off to designer Catherine Chapman for her magical transformation of the theatre.
