The Guardian: Review - The Diary of Anne Frank

Tue 21 Feb 2012

Written by Alfred Hickling, The Guardian

Anne Frank expressed a desire for immortality through her writing; though you sometimes wonder what she would have made of the kind of immortality she has achieved. In the past couple of years she has been posted on YouTube, had a version of the diary reproduced as a graphic novel, and a "sexed-up" fictionalisation released as a teen read.

The Press: Review - The Diary of Anne Frank

WE all know what happened, but still we struggle to come to terms with why it happened and more to the point why it is still happening. The tide of genocide is yet to turn, and racism has been making not only the front pages but the...

What's On Stage: Review - The Diary of Anne Frank

Tue 21 Feb 2012

Written by Sue Casson, What's On Stage

This riveting, inspiring production, marking the sixtieth anniversary of the publication of Anne Frank’s diary in English, tells the story of a group of German Jews who hid from Nazi persecution in an Amsterdam attic for some two years during World War II. Based on Anne’s diary of this period, we gain a first-hand glimpse of this nerve-wracking incarceration, brightened by the filter of a childlike perspective.

One & Other York - Review: The Diary of Anne Frank

Mon 27 Feb 2012

Written by Stephanie Jayne Osbaldeston, One & Other

One of the most recognised stories of recent history, a tale of two families, forced into hiding in from 1942 to 1944, the heart of WWII. The Diary of Anne Frank is a humbling yet uplifting personal account of hope, courage and difficult survival, with the strong realisation of what really went on behind closed doors and through the eyes of the banished Jews. Without a doubt, this is one of...

The Yorker: Review - The Diary of Anne Frank

Wed 22 Feb 2012

Written by Jonathan Eastwood

The play opens in 1942 with the Frank family being forced into hiding in the face of the rising severity of anti-Semitism. The Franks take another family, the Van Daans, in hiding with them, also eventually accepting the dentist, Mr. Dussell. With three different families confined to the claustrophobic conditions of the attic, with tensions growing both within and outside of the annex, we are to witness one the greatest...

'Cooped up in this place day after day’, watch the perfect hiding place become darkest prison. This is a respectful production of Anne Frank’s Diary which draws strength from depicting the interplay between family relations...

Ambassador - Reviews: The Diary of Anne Frank

Thu 01 Mar 2012

Written by The Joseph Rowntree School Ambassadors

I have never left a theatre still shaking from what I have witnessed, yet this performance left me more than that. The Diary of Anne Frank, performed by those at the York Theatre Royal, is one of the most moving plays I have ever seen, and what of the most moving moments of my life.

The Diary of Anne Frank

The Diary of Anne Frank

The Diary of Anne Frank

The Diary of Anne Frank is a stage adaptation of Anne Frank's world famous diary. It charts two years of her life from 1942 to 1944. Since its first publication, The Diary of a Young Girl, as Anne Frank's diary was published, has sold over 25 million copies. This extraordinary personal account of hope, courage and survival has united and touched people world wide.

Whilst hidden from the German Nazis, with her Jewish family in a secret annex in Amsterdam, Anne Frank documented her hopes, frustrations and day to day experiences in confinement. She confided all this to 'Kitty' - her diary.

Anne's wry observations of herself and her companions have been dramatised in this stunning play, evoking all the original sentiments of a young girl's dramatic and heartbreaking diary, written in the most hostile of environments.

The Diary of Anne Frank is produced by York Theatre Royal and The Touring Consortium - the same partnership that produced last spring's sell out production of To Kill A Mockingbird.

With Christopher Timothy (All Creatures Great and Small, Doctors) as Otto Frank.
