A youthful team, aged between 11 and 25, will create and run their own theatre festival, designed to entice in new audiences of their own age group. Their work will be mentored by staff from the theatre.

THE last time Ruby Clarke was involved in the TakeOver Festival, in which young people programme and run York Theatre Royal for a season, she helped decorate the foyer, stage managed one of the shows and “just really got involved wherever they needed help”. This time, for TakeOver 2013, she’s in charge as artistic director.

York Theatre Royal has secured financial support from the Arts Council for a complete rejuvenation of the theatre. York Theatre Royal is able to announce today that it has successfully got through the Stage One application process of the Arts Council’s large scale capital grants. It will receive financial support to enable it to develop the project in more detail and secure a grant of £2.9 million from the Arts Council Capital Lottery Fund.

The Arts Council have today announced that York Theatre Royal and Pilot Theatre are two of 173 organisations who have been successful in their bid for Catalyst funds. Catalyst is a capacity building and match funding scheme which will enable arts organisations to build their fundraising capacity.

Tickets for this years brand new pantomime, Robin Hood and his Merry Mam!, go on sale at 9 am Thu 1 March. Tickets are only available in person at the box office on Thu 1 March. The queues start very early (with some people camping out over night to make sure they get their favourite seats), so book early to avoid disappointment. Tickets are available over the phone and online from 10 am on Fri 2 Mar.

The lights are positioned and focused, the paints dried, the grass is laid and the satellite dish is up…meaning we are raring to go! There are lots of little limbo states during production week, periods where you’re waiting for the next event to happen. I’m currently limbo-ing before the company arrives at 4.30 for our tech part 1, which we continue tomorrow at 10. The tech for those not ‘in the know’ is the setting of the technical elements, principally the lights and sound into the piece more formulaically, getting the levels right and the length of the transitions from state to state.

We are one scene away from completing the play, that sounds very grand and final but it means we are just one scene away from having gone through every scene in the play. Perhaps nothing to shout about after 4 weeks of a 6 week rehearsal period, but it’s a significant marker nevertheless.

I had intended to update the blog last week, in response to the terrible scenes we saw in Londonand subsequent other cities. I had in mind a title something like ‘The positive side of youth’, although hopefully I would have thought up something a little pithier than that.
