What of veteran Dame Berwick? He still pulls the strings, has the last word, bonds amusingly with a snake and ad-libs with wide-eyed relish, but you sense his joy now lies as much in seeing others blossom around him.

Sets and costumes (Phil R Daniels and Charles Cusick Smith) are fabulous, and so is the main film sequence – a barnstorming musical number, We Are Yorkie! filmed around and singing the praises of the city of York.

Typically potty, there’s definitely more silliness and extravagant comedy than you could stuff a turkey with here, also including a full-scale slapstick scene from which few involved emerge mentally unscathed or indeed dry!

The dazzlingly colourful set, some nifty special effects and jokes that come thick and fast create an evening that barrels along at a prodigious pace. Many of the audience are here for their 20th or 30th outing and there are plenty of local and topical in-gags for them.

A more fantastic evening before Christmas could not have been imagined. The pantomime once again had everything, leaving both myself and seven year old Freddie with smiles on our faces.

Listen to the birthday and family greetings during a Berwick Kaler pantomime and you begin to understand what Kaler means to York families at Christmas. This year’s variation on Aladdin is as idiosyncratic as every other Kaler panto ever was - lavish, gloriously daft and with some wonderfully inventive scenes.

Prepare for a delightful evening of silliness, sparkle, and a heart-warming tale for all ages as Berwick Kaler (Widow Twankey), the UK’s longest-running pantomime dame (35 years!), takes to the stage in York. This year’s York panto is brighter and slicker than ever, while still retaining all its charm and well-loved elements, including Kaler’s ad-libs, a vivacious ensemble, Wagon Wheels, local newsreader Harry Gration, and a chorus of young people who perform with the utmost professionalism and focus.

Stunning costumes and surreal, anarchic sets are far, far too good, and several video montages of the cast's comical musical escapades around York make this certainly the first multimedia pantomime I've ever seen.

As always, the show is stuffed with material and gags; Kaler must pun in his sleep, and for a pensionable dame, his mind seems still to work insanely sharply and quickly (and never predictably). That Cruden spins this together into an event that is at least as much fun for the audience as it seems to be for the cast is admirable in the extreme. It’s a hit formula which deserves to pack them in again this Christmas.

Kaler and his team have that unique blend of saucy vulgarity, sincere goodwill and bags of energy. And York’s is still the undisputed, five star, gold-plated, ocean-going, fur-lined Emperor of all pantos.

The York Family Robinson, Robin Hood and His Merry Mam and now Aladdin and the Twankeys all suggest that the family pantomime relies more than ever on the presence of a pantomime family.

Tradition is so much in the DNA of this production that before the final sing-along I was already working out when my young children would be old enough to bring along so we could start our own tradition, just like so many families in the audience obviously had.

This is Berwick Kaler's 35th pantomime at York – as writer and as dame. It's a family affair, the family being the company and the population of the entire city and its environs, plus guests and newcomers.

Pantomime Review: Aladdin and the Twankeys - ✭✭✭✭ from Back Stage Pass Its not often I go to a pantomime nearly halfway through a run, but I'll be honest with you and say that I'm glad I did. Sometimes a press night can be slow, unfinished, cuts need to be made to script to tighten it all up. On this occasion, what I saw was a perfectly polished lamp of a show.

If you think Miranda plays with the third wall then Mr Kaler takes a sledgehammer to it as he smashes any barriers to smithereens, inviting the audience to become auxiliary cast members. It does feel a bit odd to be watching panto in early January, but such is Kaler’s pulling power, Aladdin and the Twankeys is running until next month to packed houses.

This is a panto like no other - yes it has superb sets, sparkle, slapstick, romance, a baddie and audience participation - but how it differs from others I have seen is that the actors make you feel like a member of the family. The involvement of the whole theatre only helps to enhance the hilarity of the obvious adlibbing, constant corpsing and in-jokes. it just wouldn’t be the same without it.
