Fifth blog from Andy Bewley

Wed 30 Apr 2014

One of the great adventures of doing such a great play is the work we do outside of the text. A foundation to a lot of our work is building up a backstory for each of the characters, so that when they speak Churchill's words they are speaking them with a logical reference point and from as genuine and truthful place as possible. This can be tricky.

Second blog from Andy Bewley, Assistant Director

Wed 30 Apr 2014

Table work provides the basis for the majority of the rehearsals in our first week. Even when we get it up on our feet, Juliet is still keen to make sure that we are letting nothing in the text go unnoticed nor unused. A great first week. Great fun as well. 147 keepy uppies by the way.

Third blog from Assistant Director, Andy Bewley

Wed 30 Apr 2014

One of my initial tasks was to provide the company with a detailed overview of the history, science and story of human cloning. Having been notified by a previous Chemistry teacher that I was “to science what rain was to a bunsen burner” my eyes did not alight at the potential for hours of scientific research. Nevertheless, it may have taken me the best part of an Easter Holiday to understand the very basics of human cloning, but understand them I did. Here's how it works: ...actually no, a quick search on google will do a better job and moreover this isn't a play about human cloning - it's so much more than that. It's a play that in one setting and five scenes provokes vast, perhaps unanswerable questions; but the brilliance is that Churchill doesn't answer them. Churchill poses the question, throws it into space and then leaves you to ponder it. What makes a father a father ? Is it simply biology ? Is it responsibility? What is the value of a human life ? What is 'identity' ?

Fourth blog from the rehearsal room of 'A Number'

Fri 25 Apr 2014

As the second week of rehearsals progresses Juliet is keen to focus more and more upon the punctuation that Churchill uses. Often in plays the words you say and how you say it are the most important aspects; however, Churchill is so sparing with what she says that punctuation becomes as important, if not more. Every comma, full stop, any anything is absolutely intended by Churchill to affect the piece in some way.

Third blog from the Assistant Director of 'A Number'

Even at this early point, it is clear that George and Niall are creating quite special characters which subsequently are building some enormously engaging relationships.

Having given an idea about how the first day of the production went, in this entry I am going to talk more generally about the play and what makes it so extraordinary.

Second Blog from Assistant Director Andra Catincescu

Wed 16 Oct 2013

The second week of rehearsals for Can’t Stand Up for Falling Down has gone splendidly well, and our three protagonists, Lynette, Ruby and Jodie are on track to becoming 3D human beings.

With such a meticulous rehearsal process and a wealth of research, the production is very likely to prove one of the highlights of the season. Watch this space to follow the progress of Lynette, Ruby and Jodie over the next three weeks.
