Having given an idea about how the first day of the production went, in this entry I am going to talk more generally about the play and what makes it so extraordinary.

With such a meticulous rehearsal process and a wealth of research, the production is very likely to prove one of the highlights of the season. Watch this space to follow the progress of Lynette, Ruby and Jodie over the next three weeks.

See How They Run blog Part 6

Mon 23 Sep 2013

In the final week of rehearsals for See How They Run, we move into the theatre and onto the stage. Technical and design aspects take priority at the start of week with the set design incrementally being realised in front of our eyes. Barney George, the designer, supervises the fulfilment of his design, including layering detail (such as ‘ageing’ the walls and the windows) and set dressing (ornaments on the mantelpiece and props visible in open cupboards and drawers). Scenic artists and the theatre’s stage management team all contribute their efforts to create the world of the Vicarage at Merton-Cum-Middlewick.

Throughout the week the actors also have other tasks to do. Three actors over three consecutive evenings attend a youth theatre session to lead a 45 minute workshop on farce. York Theatre Royal’s Youth Theatre will be coming to see the show during its run, and meeting the actors beforehand is a helpful and informative part of their theatrical experience. I also attend one of the youth theatre sessions, participating and assisting with the workshop - I have great fun, I might add!

As a director, she has a sharp eye for detail both in clarifying the movement of the actors and in extolling observation of the text’s punctuation – for instance, full stops should not allow rising inflections and exclamation marks should invariably be acted upon. Philip King’s writing is precise, almost intractably so, and anything that goes against the grain, prevents the agency of a gag and impedes the driving force of the narrative.

A highlight of the week is when the fight director Liam Evans-Ford arrives in the rehearsal room to choreograph a fight scene. Masterfully, he plucks moves from his arsenal of choreography to respond to Juliet’s direction and the actors’ own suggestions. It is great fun to watch and I am impressed by how quickly the actors are able to learn and perform the choreography.

uliet expresses her belief that all the characters are passionate about particular things in life, and that owing to the genre of farce, the audience should not fully sympathise with any of them. By being slightly removed / distanced from these characters, the audience are encouraged to find the misfortunes that these people experience funny, rather than distressing.
