Review: Sherlock Holmes - One and Other

"The Guildhall’s magnificent Council Chamber, provides a fitting playground for the game of wit that is, most evidently, afoot"

Bellerby’s direction sends his actors spinning with ease around the beautiful surroundings of York’s Guildhall, and Wright’s script gives licence to the actors to improvise around the otherwise tightly crafted tale, meaning that every night will genuinely be a different experience.

Wright's play is a combination of the playful, the practical, the pugilistic and the problem-solving, with a storyline that finds room for pranks, sword-fighting, firearms, physical theatre and sly intelligence...and Moriarty? Play the game and you will love it

Review: The Wind in the Willows - British Theatre Guide

Mon 11 Aug 2014

Written by British Theatre Guide

"When the riverbank friends combine to take back Toad Hall from the woodland invaders, a lengthy, joyous, chaotic sequence of swashbuckling, choreographed by Liam Evans-Ford and executed with vigour and humour by the cast, is almost worth the admission itself."

Before taking our seats we were all invited to head backstage to check out the pre show experience. Now I have to admit that I had no idea what to expect however what we did experience was quite frankly brilliant. York Theatre Royal’s extremely talented designers and craftsmen have re-created the homes of much loved characters Mole, Ratty and Mrs Badger and they have done so in a beautiful and extremely detailed fashion.

Talking of fiddles, it would be remiss not to mention the compositions of musical director Christopher Madin, whose pastoral English score on accordion, violin and woodwind evokes Ralph Vaughan Williams and the verdant folk songbook. The actor-musician contributions of Josh Sneesby's Mr Rabbit, Deborah Hewitt's Mrs Otter and Richard Mark's Mr Fox are truly animal magic.

Before the show started, there was the opportunity to experience all along the riverbank, on, and under the York Theatre Royal stage. You could peep into Mole’s cosy home, and imagine warming yourself by Badger’s fireplace, snug and safe underground. All credit to Catherine Chapman and Lydia Denno for their fabulous designs.
