Review: The Play That Goes Wrong - York Mix

Wed 09 Apr 2014

Written by Steve Shooter

A very sharp, knowing script and beautiful set design added to the balls out comedy of the production. It is very rare for me to attend a theatre show which has an entire audience enthralled, which mixes strong verbal timing with broad physical comedy to satisfy pretty much everyone. My face hurt from laughing.

Review: Twelfth Night - The Press

Written by Charles Hutchinson

This Twelfth Night ranks in the highest echelons of YSP productions: a Shakespeare comedy that never strains too hard and is full of wit, romance and fabulous music.

Isn’t it a wonderful thing to leave a play with a smile on your face? Such was the case just now while walking home from York Shakespeare Project’s superb adaptation of Twelfth Night, a production so fun and imaginative that it will have me cooing for days

Review: Twelfth Night - Remote Goat

A witty, imaginative performance from all, which I could watch all over again! Humorous and creative; don't miss!

Review: An August Bank Holiday Lark - The Press

Thu 03 Apr 2014

Written by Charles Hutchinson

McAndrew’s story wins through; even if you can predict its progress, it still pulls at the heart as much as it brings a smile.

Review: Birdsong - The Yorkshire Post

Fri 28 Mar 2014

Written by Yvette Huddleston

Several of the cast play ably more than one role and the transitions between scenes – often involving time shifts between pre-War and wartime – are expertly handled on Victoria Spearing’s wonderful set that incorporates at various points the trenches, a family home, a field hospital and a cafe.

Superb version of Faulks’s novel

Review: Birdsong - Wetherby News

Thu 27 Mar 2014

Written by Vicky Carr

The most affecting scenes in the novel, set in the First World War, are those when the lead characters are fighting in the trenches and going “over the top” to face German fire, or when the miners, whose task is to tunnel under no-man’s land, become trapped in the soil. How could they possibly be recreated on a stage? Surprisingly, the play works very well – not least because it does not stick rigidly to the structure of the novel.

Review: Birdsong - Pocklington Post

Wed 26 Mar 2014

Written by Julia Pattison

The quality of the acting of the whole cast was outstanding; passion and pain came over to us in the audience, and the sense of loss was almost unbearable at times.

Review: Birdsong

Wed 26 Mar 2014

Written by Steve Shooter from the YorkMix

The 2014 tour of Birdsong, based on director Rachel Wagstaffe’s adaptation of Sebastian Faulks’ classic novel, hits York Theatre Royal this week.
