This textile and mixed media art group was founded in 2003 and meets regularly in York.
The members are self-motivated and committed to developing their own work under the guidance of Diane Bates, Retired Senior Lecturer at Bradford College of Art, Design & Textiles. They find that meeting with Diane as well as working together helps the creative process and provides feedback, support and inspiration.
Most of the members have a lifelong interest in embroidery and related crafts and have each undertaken some form of design, art or embroidery studies. Some are still studying, whether it’s at City & Guild’s level or degree level. The members all have very different styles including hand embroidery, felting, machine embroidery, dyeing as well as mixed media, hence the name. Many of the group also have other creative skills ranging from making silver jewellery to unique ceramics and painting.
Since its inception Diverse Threads has exhibited regularly in Yorkshire, always including new work at each exhibition.
Some of the members of the group also exhibit on a solo basis, teach, take workshops, give talks and work to commission as well as participating in local Open Studios Events.

Enamelling is the process of fusing layers of ground glass (enamel) onto metal (gold; silver; copper; steel) using a kiln or torch. The ground glass is a combination of silica, soda ash and small amounts of metal oxides to give it colour. Firings can take from 30 seconds to several minutes, with the kiln heated between 650°C and 1000°C, depending on the techniques and materials used.
The aim of the British Society of Enamellers is to promote excellence in British enamelling. We support the highest standards of original design and craftsmanship.
It is hoped the diverse nature of the work featured in this exhibition will inspire interest in the work of enamellers everywhere.
