Q & A with Lindsay Whitwell – Events Coordinator at De Grey Rooms

How long have you been working at York Theatre Royal?

I started on Friday 13th April 2012.

What does your job entail on a day to day basis?

There’s a lot of versatility in my job, I field new enquiries and help plan the events that take place in the De Grey Rooms.  I then set the events,  I also duty manage the events to ensure they run smoothly.  As we’ve only recently taken over as keepers of the De Grey Rooms I also develop the systems in place, meet with suppliers and look at ways of improving the product we offer our guests.

What are your favourite parts of the job?

I love helping create memories, and although putting together a wedding or special occasion can be exhausting it is also incredibly rewarding.  Bringing a project together and helping someone realise the biggest day of there life is a very privileged position.  And there’s that moment when guests see the Ballroom for the first time; I never tire of seeing their reaction; it reminds me how I felt when I walked in for the first time.

It sounds clichéd but working as part of the theatre is a dream for me, there’s always a new company of actors coming or going, along side staff who have been here for years.  It creates such a dynamic atmosphere but you know there’s always someone you can ask for help, an expert who can assist.

What are the most challenging parts of your job?

Thankfully, I enjoy problem solving because working in events you are always faced with the unexpected.  Also first and foremost, the De Grey Rooms are part of a working theatre, so time and space management is essential in order to hold rehearsals and weddings in the same week. 

 What attracted you to working in Events?

Having studied Drama and Literature at University, my first love is the Arts so events might seem like an odd choice, but I think putting together a party or gala dinner is a lot like putting on a production; I have an incredibly set to work with in the form of the beautiful Victorian Ballroom.  We then dress it, our cast is on hand to welcome and facilitate, lighting and music is added suddenly a little theatrical magic is created.  It’s the process of planning, putting on and packing away that is so appealing, that and I love a good party!

How would you describe working at York Theatre Royal in 3 words?

Diverse.  Entertaining.  Exhilarating

 

Planning Your Event

The newly refurbished De Grey Ballroom is the ideal venue to hold your special event.

The De Grey Rooms are perfect for wedding receptions and dances, but are also a stunning setting for conferences, celebrations, award ceremonies, dinners, or any other special event.

The Ballroom has a capacity to seat up to 144 guests for formal dining, and parties of up to 180 guests can be accommodated for dancing with less formal dining options.

The cost of hiring the Ballroom also includes the use of the staffed Cocktail Bar which is adjacent to the ballroom. With a wide range of beers, wines and spirits, the Cocktail Bar compliments the Ballroom beautifully.
