York Theatre Royal has been producing great drama in the beautiful City of York for over 250 years and is one of the country’s leading producing theatres. Each year it welcomes over 200,000 people to a wide variety of performance and participatory activity.
Working in two auditoria and in site specific locations it produces work that ranges from new writing to classics to shows for children and young people and youth theatre productions as well as its world-renowned pantomime. York Theatre Royal and the team behind The Railway Children won a prestigious Olivier Award earlier this year.
York Theatre Royal has one of the busiest Education & Community departments in the country. Amongst its activity is a thriving youth theatre of over 300 young people, the nationally recognised TakeOver Festival and an artistic commissioning programme that creates new theatre work for young people to perform.
York Theatre Royal's continuing commitment to seeking new artistic challenges it will be producing the York Mystery Plays 2012 in the York Museum Gardens, in partnership with Riding Light's Theatre Company and York Museum's Trust, celebrating the Olympic year and York 800.
