Opportunities for Young People

TakeOver

From 21 May the theatre will become the hub of an exciting three week festival run entirely by a team of enthusiastic under 26 year olds.

Every year the York Theatre Royal Senior Management Team hand over the reigns to a new TakeOver team who are responsible for running everything from the programming of shows and events to managing backstage. We will be bringing new and exciting ideas to the table, whilst shadowing the permanent staff at the theatre and learning the ropes.

Youth Theatre

York Theatre Royal Youth Theatre is for anyone aged between 5 - 19 and gives young actors the opportunity to learn teamwork, communication and different theatrical techniques. Each youth theatre group has the opportunity to perform at least once a year, either in the theatre Main House, Studio Theatre or in another venue.

Early Years

We have quite a few shows specifically for young children throughout the year, as well as our popular Storymakers sessions for 2 - 5 year olds and our LittleFeet festival, a week of shows and activities for babies, toddlers and young children.

Holiday Activities

At a loose end for activities over the holidays? We run various theatre-based workshops and activitys during school holidays, including our ever popular Play in a Week sessions.

Arts Award

We offer Arts Award to all of our youth theatre members aged 11-25, and also on a project specific basis, such as Play in a Week and specific productions. In addition to this, our members of youth theatre staff within this age group can gain an Arts Award. Arts Award is a qualification in arts leadership in which young people get experience of managing arts projects, sharing arts skills, reviewing arts events, researching arts careers on a practical level and participating in individual arts challenges. Each young person is supported by an adviser who will guide them through their own personal arts award journey, devised to include their individual skills and interests. More about Arts Award can be found at www.artsaward.org.uk

Arts Award Welcome

We are also an Arts Award welcome centre and regularly have offers and opportunities which will support the arts award at Bronze, Silver and Gold level, as well as the new Discover and Explore levels. These can include discounted tickets, opportunities to interview and shadow actors, directors and production staff, post show discussions and tours.

To find out more about what we can offer your Arts Award centre, please contact education@yorktheatreroyal.co.uk
