The Telegraph: Sir Jackie Stewart's tribute to the 'guinea pigs'

Mon 15 Oct 2012

By Tim Walker for The Telegraph

6:30AM BST 15 Oct 2012

Feeling an affinity with the RAF airmen who were badly burnt during the war, Sir Jackie Stewart journeyed from his home in Buckinghamshire to join some of their number for a special performance of The Guinea Pig Club at York Theatre Royal.

It is written by Susan Watkins, whose late husband Sid was a neurosurgeon attached to the Formula One team. He had been inspired by Sir Archibald McIndoe, the pioneering plastic surgeon who treated the so-called guinea pigs. “It is that rare thing — a play that celebrates the British spirit,” says the three-times winner of the World Drivers’ Championships, who was close to Prof Sid Watkins.

Sir Jackie lost 57 of his friends on the track during his career. “There were many others who were burnt,” he tells me. “We live in a world where we attach far too much importance to looks, and, all too often, overlook the human spirit, but that’s the thing that lasts, as the guinea pigs who are here tonight show so well.”
