Directors Katie Posner and Juliet Forster discuss the challenge of taking on two short plays which are running back to back in the York Theatre Royal Studio. Tackling modern day relationships with a deliciously dark and funny approach, End Of Desire, the opening play, is by the Irish writer David Ireland, while Escaping Alice is by Matthew Pegg. The first deals with beginnings, while the second considers how matters end.

When tutti frutti’s production of Rapunzel opens in York Theatre Royal’s Studio on September 27th, it will mark 21 years of performance by the Leeds-based company. As befits a company aiming its productions at 3-7 year olds, tutti frutti is small-scale in production style: in her productions artistic director Wendy Harris has used a maximum of four actors (a minimum of one!) and tours take in primary schools and village halls together with studio theatres.

Whilst Marlowe’s hapless Doctor Faustus may have seen a sticky and unfortunate end for his dangerous dealings with Lucifer, actor Graeme Hawley seems to have got off pretty lightly with his brush with the devil. For the former Coronation Street star thankfully bears no traces of the devilish alter-ego that has stalked him throughout this summer as he nightly performed the arduous tasks of damning mankind and battling with God, transformed into the ultimate baddy, Satan, for the York Mystery Plays 2012.

This brand new stage adaptation by BAFTA-winning playwright Roy Williams (Sucker Punch, Fallout, Sing Yer Heart Out For The Lads) of Alan Sillitoe’s 1959 short story, about a young man’s sense of alienation from his society, is a co-production by Pilot Theatre and York Theatre Royal, directed by Marcus Romer. I asked Elliot Barnes-Worrell, making his professional stage debut as Colin Smith, a 17 year-old Borstal boy with a passion for running, why he feels that people should come and see this production.

The Arts Council have today announced that York Theatre Royal and Pilot Theatre are two of 173 organisations who have been successful in their bid for Catalyst funds. Catalyst is a capacity building and match funding scheme which will enable arts organisations to build their fundraising capacity.

Tickets for this years brand new pantomime, Robin Hood and his Merry Mam!, go on sale at 9 am Thu 1 March. Tickets are only available in person at the box office on Thu 1 March. The queues start very early (with some people camping out over night to make sure they get their favourite seats), so book early to avoid disappointment. Tickets are available over the phone and online from 10 am on Fri 2 Mar.
