York Light Opera, founded in 1953 has been bringing first class musicals to York ever since. From the post-war American shows, Oklahoma! It has existed since 1922 and, in the 1950s, local schoolgirl Judi Dench and her family were members. The Drama Society produces a wide range of plays, from classic drama to modern comedies, at a variety of York theatre venues. Membership and auditions are open to everyone and we are always looking for creative types to join our production teams. Old Bomb Theatre Company is an innovative, new amateur dramatic theatre company that aims to bring exciting theatre to new audiences, involving the very best home-grown acting and production talent. The company opened in 2006 with David Mamet’s Oleanna and takes its name from the predictive text conversion of the play’s title, which becomes ‘Old Bomb’. With its recent highly successful production of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, the company specialises in smaller cast, challenging plays. Old Bomb Theatre was created to provide provocative, punchy drama that expands the mind and reflects the community that supports it. They stage two productions per year, one in York Theatre Royal and one in the Joseph Rowntree Theatre. Most recent productions have included The Yeomen of the Guard, Hugh the Drover and Eugene Onegin. Singers are drawn from across Yorkshire and the next Theatre Royal production will be Verdi's Macbeth in October 2009. The Company has staged productions continuously with the exception of the war years and is proud of its long record of presenting exceptional musical theatre in York. The company perform a large-scale musical at York Theatre Royal every year, with smaller scale productions in other venues across York. These include Hooray for Hollywood, When The Lights Go On Again, Nunsense and annual Christmas shows and concerts. The company have also performed an outdoor concert of Pirates of Penzance for the re-opening of Joseph Rowntree's Park. The Company engages a professional Director, Musical Director, Company Stage Manager and Lighting Designer who work closely with the staff at the York Theatre Royal.The Company commissions new and innovative sets and costumes to complement the high standards of production the Company achieves under the direction of Paul Laidlaw, our Artistic Director.
