From his entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday through to his death at the hands of Pontius Pilate, Jesus Christ Superstar is an epic, covering the last seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Telling the story of men and women driven to their fate by forces beyond their control, this unique musical is as powerful and compelling today as the day it was written.
The smash-hit musical first exploded onto the stage in 1971, and it was clear that the musical world would never be the same again. Acclaimed as a masterpiece, it has since attained the status of theatrical legend. It is packed with hit songs including I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Could We Start Again Please and Superstar. The fierce rock rhythms, chunky power chords and heart searing ballads combine to produce an unforgettable piece detailing the last amazing seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth.
The role of Jesus will be played by newcomer Henry Bird, who will be making his debut at a major venue. For the past 12 years Henry has been gaining theatrical experience with The Flying Ducks Youth Theatre Group and also performs regularly with a local rock band, accompanied by fellow cast newcomer, Adam Hawley, who plays apostle Simon.
In contrast the crucial character of Judas will be played by long-standing member Roy Mulvihill. Remembered by York audiences for his portrayal of Jesus in the York Mystery Plays and four years later as Lucifer, Jesus Christ Superstar will be his biblical hat trick.
Julie-Ann Smith who has taken the lead in several shows, notably Miss Hanagan in Annie and Mabel Norman in Mack & Mabel will play the only female lead, Mary Magdalene. The show will be in the safe hands of veteran director Bev Jones, who directed last year's Me and My Girl.
The musical will be directed by Bev Jones. After playing numerous lead roles with York Light Opera Company Ltd, Bev turned his hand to directing and has since been in charge of the Company's shows for over 20 years. His musical choral arrangements have become a firm favourite with York audiences.
Tickets are priced between £5.00 - £16.75 and can be obtained from the York Theatre Royal Box office or by calling 01904 623568
