This September, one of the most disturbing and celebrated novels of modern time will be vividly brought to life in the Pilot Theatre and York Theatre Royal co-production of William Golding’s haunting tale of survival - Lord of the Flies. The award-inning production runs in the main house from 12-27 September at 7.30pm.
Following a plane crash on an uninhabited island, the story follows the actions of a group of adolescent schoolboys as they battle against the elements for survival and supremacy. The island becomes a dark and dangerous place, where dreams turn to nightmares. From the award-winning company who brought you Looking for JJ and Sing Yer Heart Out for the Lads, comes a story of survival. True to the vision of the novel the production is powerful and thought-provoking.
Under the direction of artistic director, Marcus Romer, who first staged the play exactly 10 years ago at York Theatre Royal, Lord of the Flies is a stunning multi media interpretation of William Golding's gritty and immensely gripping story, which explores the dark and at times disturbing actions of schoolboys marooned on a desert island.
First published in 1955, Lord of the Flies remains a classic, speaking to every subsequent generation and being referenced by innumerable artists and art forms from Stephen King to U2, The Simpsons and South Park to Lost. In this era of reality TV, it remains a salutary warning of the dangers of social experimentation. Lord of the Flies’ impressive cast includes Davood Ghadami (Bouncers, York Theatre Royal); Dominic Doughty (Ideal, BBC Three); Tony Hasnath (Monkey, West Yorkshire Playhouse); Elliot Quinn (Silly Billy, York Theatre Royal), Mark Knightley, Lachlan MCcall, and twins Ben and Michael Sewell.
Based at York Theatre Royal, Pilot Theatre creates, develops and tours pioneering, high quality, culturally diverse theatre work for young people. In addition to performance Pilot Theatre delivers a national programme of schools’ workshops aimed to encourage active participation and give young people direct contact with professional artists.
