You can’t change what happened… No matter how much you think of it or cry you can’t change a single second of it… The only thing you can change is the future. This is what Alice Tully is set to discover when York Theatre Royal, Pilot Theatre and Unicorn Theatre, London join forces to present the world stage première of Anne Cassidy's compelling and much-loved novel for teenagers, Looking for JJ. Marcus Romer’s adaptation of the award-winning novel will run at York Theatre Royal from 28 September – 6 October 2007.
Three children walked away from the cottages on the edge of town towards Berwick Waters. Later that day only two of them returned… Alice Tully knows exactly what happened that day six years ago, and no matter how many times she starts over she will never be able to forget about it. Neither will a lot of other people. They will always be looking for JJ.
Alice tells her story, JJ’s story, in an account that is candid but unsensational; her audience are compelled to consider the challenges of growing up, of deciding what you are and who you want to be when the past is difficult to live with. Looking for JJ considers how she might feel, six years later, when, released from custody, she tries to make a life for herself with a new identity. She has a life, people who care for her, a job, a boyfriend, a university course to look forward to. Can she ever forget the past though? Can people forgive her for what she has done? Can she forgive herself?
From the award-winning company who brought you Lord of the Flies and Roy Williams’ Sing Yer Heart Out For The Lads, comes this gripping story of loss and life. Pilot integrates music, design and technology to produce a stunning piece of theatre; drawing on the blogging culture familiar to users of MySpace, Bebo and Facebook, the production is thought-provoking, powerful and engages audiences of all ages.
Winner of the Booktrust Teenage Book Award 2004 for Looking for JJ, Anne Cassidy was born in London in 1952 and was a teacher in London schools for 19 years before she turned to writing full-time. Anne has been writing books for teenagers for many years and concentrates on crime stories and thrillers. Other titles include The Story of My Life, Innocent, Tough Love and Missing Judy: see www.scholastic.co.uk for further details.
The production’s excellent cast includes Christina Baily (Danni in Hollyoaks) as JJ; Melanie Ash (Colleen King from Emmerdale) as Carol/Jill/Sara; Rochelle Gadd (Olivia Johnson in Hollyoaks) as Lucy; Davood Ghadami (Bouncers, York Theatre Royal) as Frankie/Stevie/Mr Cottis; Louise Kempton (School for Wives, British Tobacco Factory) as Michelle and Suzann McLean (Little Miss Jocelyn (BBC), Sing Yer Heart Out for the Lads, York Theatre Royal and tour) as Rosie.
