This March, York Theatre Royal will teaming up with one of the country’s most respected theatre companies, Sphinx Theatre, to stage the world premiere of Blame, the new play from acclaimed writers Beatrix Campbell and Judith Jones. The compelling and provocative new play runs at York Theatre Royal from 3-17 March.
Blame a new play by Judith Jones and Beatrix Campbell is a biting exposé of Britain’s new underclass and the way the social landscape of Britain has transformed before our very eyes. In two short decades there has been the creation of a permanent class of people with scarce access to the means of earning a legal living wage and with a third of the country’s children living in poverty – the highest ratio in Europe. Who is to blame, and what are we blaming ‘them’ for?
Mandy’s council flat has no boundaries; the door’s been off its hinges for weeks and Mandy has all kinds of visitors…. She’ll get her life together soon, but not yet, not tonight. It’s her birthday and she’s going to party like there’s no tomorrow. During the party phone calls go unanswered. The next morning her eight year old daughter is gone and the accusations begin…
Blame is the second play by acclaimed writer and television and radio broadcaster Beatrix Campbell and social worker and commentator Judith Jones. Their first play, All The Children Cried, premiered at West Yorkshire Playhouse in 2002. Appearing on national critics shortlists, the play transferred to the New End Theatre, London and ran at BAC as part of the Time Out Critics’ Choice Season in 2004.
Director Deborah Bruce lives in Newcastle and her previous productions have included Musik Oxford Stage Company; Made Of Stone at The Royal Court, the national tour of Taking Sides and The Woman Who Swallowed A Pin Southwark Playhouse.
The excellent cast includes well-known actors Lindsey Coulson (Eastenders, Clocking Off), Andrew Paul (The Bill, Where The Heart Is) and Nicholas Beveney (Skins, Waking The Dead).
Sphinx is a touring theatre company that places women centre stage. Since its inception over thirty years ago it has worked with leading women writers, directors and actors to create groundbreaking, experimental and vital theatre. Blame is testimony to Sphinx’s longstanding commitment to developing and producing new writing. In 2006 Sphinx launched the biennial Brave New Roles Award, sponsored by Oberon Books, whose winners are currently under commission.
