************************* A career defining performance by one of York Theatre Royal’s best loved actresses is set to reprised again when Olivier nominated actress Elizabeth Mansfield revives her role of one of the greatest music hall artists of all time in Marie – The Story of Marie Lloyd in the Studio from 4-13 Sept. The York Theatre Royal and Ensemble co-production takes the audience on a journey through her remarkable life, re-discovering the rich narratives in her songs and weaving them through her story. The show gives a fascinating insight into the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, as time and again Marie heroically strikes out against the hypocrisy of her day. The show, featuring songs including Don’t Dilly Dally on the Way”, “Oh! Mr Porter”, “A Little of what you Fancy does you Good, and “The Boy I Love is Up in the Gallery, captures all the riotous fun and irrepressible talent, as well as the pain and anguish, of a truly remarkable woman. Marie was first produced by Elizabeth Mansfield and writer Steve Trafford in 1987. It opened at the City Varieties in Leeds, directed by Andrew Manley, and after a short tour went to the Edinburgh Festival, playing at the Herriot Watt Theatre. In 1988 it was produced at the Drill Hall Theatre. The show was produced again, for an extended run of Sunday performances at the Fortune Theatre, during which time Elizabeth Mansfield was nominated ‘Best Actress in a Musical’ in the 1996 Laurence Olivier Awards, ‘Best Actress’ in the London Critic’s Awards, and ‘Best Actress’ in the Sony Radio Awards, for Steve Trafford’s BBC Radio 4 adaptation of the show. Elizabeth and Steve produced a new production of MARIE, directed by Annie Castledine, in 2000. The current production is a revival of the original West End production. Actress Elizabeth Mansfield said about reprising her role of Marie Lloyd, "It's very exciting to be re-discovering MARIE again. This is such a challenging and fulfilling role to play. It's rare that one has the opportunity, as a performer, to keep enriching a character, especially one with as much charisma, fun, and also pathos, as Marie Lloyd. MARIE works through the character's warm engagement with the audience, in both the text and songs, and the intimacy of York Theatre Royal's marvellous Studio space will bring this aspect of the production wonderfully to life." Tickets for this not-to-be missed production are priced at £10.00 - £12.00. Tickets for Under 25s and Students are £5.00 and can be purchased at the York Theatre Royal Box Office or by calling 01904 623568. Tickets are also available securely online at www.yorktheatreroyal.co.uk **************************
