York Theatre Royal is delighted to welcome London-based theatre-company Box Clever as they stage their explosive new thriller set in modern day Europe, Dirty Kissing, in the Studio from the 20-22 November.
A fast-moving mix of poetic theatre and intense physical action, accompanied live onstage by DJ Virgil Howe from acclaimed rockers, “The Dirty Feel”, Dirty Kissing takes a disturbingly close look at the bigger picture of life in modern Europe. Six people get tangled up in a ruthless world of drug-running and immigration scams lurking just beneath the picture-book facade of a provincial coastal town.
Scott wants power. Aran wants a quiet life. Dad wants another fix. Shaz wants Abi. Abi wants Ion. And Ion wants revenge. But what you want isn’t always what you get.
Produced in association with ARC in Stockton-on-Tees, where it will première, the play is directed by Iqbal Khan (National Theatre), with Georgina Lamb (Frantic Assembly) as Movement Director.
Dirty Kissing is the first tour in Box Clever’s Urban Mischief Project, which aims to develop a closer working relationship between the company, venues and our respective young audiences. Box Clever’s Artistic Director and writer of the play, Michael Wicherek, said: “We’re delighted to be pioneering this new project with DIRTY KISSING. The play is about people caught in a no-man’s land, between the pull of their aspirations and the pull of their pasts - and about how these opposing forces could destroy their present. The characters’ lives are relevant to - and played out in - the world ‘as it is’, in 2007, in a Europe in transition.”
Box Clever is an award-winning, writer-led touring company dedicated to the creation of contemporary theatre for young people. Since 1996 they’ve built a reputation as a producer of high-quality theatre work, school tours, training projects and conferences. Our work reached a nationwide audience of over 70,000 in 2006-07.
Tickets are priced at £10.00. Tickets for Under 25s and Students are £5.00 and can be purchased at the York Theatre Royal Box Office or by calling 01904 623568. Tickets are also available securely online at www.yorktheatreroyal.co.uk.
