This November Yellow Leaf Theatre Company are set to make a welcome return to York Theatre Royal Studio with their latest production Scribbler and Spouse, written by award-winning Yorkshire playwright, James Robson. The play runs in the Studio from 6-7 November at 7.45 (Matinèe performance on 7 November at 2pm).
‘Scribbler’ has been there, done it, survived the hangovers and carries the scars. Now he’s ready to spill the beans. And not just about the Soaps, but Posh Theatre, Fringe Theatre, First Night catastrophes… Like Scribbler, James Robson has been there too. His fascinating and ferociously funny script will give you an eye-opening backstage tour of the drama industry. This is the authentic insider’s voice, beautifully written, unflinchingly honest. Oh and his ‘Spouse’ may blurt out a few home truths that even Scribbler might blush to mention.
Scribbler & Spouse’ is an eye-opener on many levels. Yes, there are the jokes and the gossip – the affairs, the booze, the Award Ceremony Parties, the whole “Jeffrey Bernard” vibe. But there’s also a mature and complex love story. The effect on close relationships of a life that consists of: “sudden gain; sudden loss, money as transient as dew, success and happiness as elusive as fairy gold”. And above and beyond all the down-and-dirty details of frustration and celebrity, there remains a ringing hymn of loyalty to the integrity of the creative craft.
James Robson has written most kinds of drama in a thirty year career: scripts for the Royal Shakespeare Company, for Emmerdale and Heartbeat, and for The Archers, plus acclaimed single works in all media. He’s tasted the triumph and felt the despair. He’s seen life in the spotlight – and through the bottom of a bottle. Now his new play promises to lift the lid and paint a warts-and-all picture of the scribbling life.
The production will feature Alan Meadows, who has directed all of the company’s shows to date, in the role of ‘Scribbler’ and Vanessa Rosenthal – who appeared last year at York Theatre Royal in her own play, Modelling Spitfires - in the well-matched part of ‘Spouse’. She has known the author for many years.
Scribbler & Spouse is directed by Chris Wilkinson has who taken leading roles in the last three Yellow Leaf plays. Chris said about the production, “The play fits perfectly with the company’s good-quality, go-anywhere policy. It’s fairly simple to stage – but its impact is far from simple. ‘Scribbler’ informs, entertains and moves audiences in equal measure.”
