Yorkshire Dance is proud to present Dansopolis, a showcase of vibrant and diverse dance groups from around the region celebrating the best community dance in Yorkshire at York Theatre Royal on Tuesday 26 June.
There is a great spread of participants from across the Yorkshire region with groups from Sheffield, Leeds, Wakefield, Scarborough, York and Halifax. The groups will demonstrate a variety of styles such as Hip Hop, Raggaeton and Samba, Contemporary, Bollywood, Breakdance and Disco.
The evening will also see the premiere of a fabulous new commission from Wayne McGregor, Artistic Director of Random Dance and Associate Choreographer for The Royal Ballet. This is an intergenerational piece including dancers of all ages and abilities, from 18 months to eighty years.
This is the third Dansopolis event but the first time it has been brought over to York and been part of the Dance York festival. This is part of a growing relationship between Yorkshire Dance and City of York, Arts and Culture team who have provided a satellite office in York since last year.
This year Yorkshire Dance celebrates its 25th anniversary. To commemorate the occasion Yorkshire Dance is hosting a series of events called 25/25. This project sees 5 classes of 5 types taking place during the Dance York festival. These events include-
• 5 free classes for York schools exploring the Bicentenary of the Abolition of Slavery through African Caribbean carnival and dance.
• 5 free classes for early years groups.
• 5 free classes designed to work with groups who have specific needs including people with learning difficulties.
• 5 free ‘Jus-Have-a-Go’ workshops at Temple Hall, York St. John College covering Contemporary, Street Dance, 80s dance, Jazz and West End Musicals on Sunday 24 June. Suitable for anyone 16 years plus.
• 5 Master Classes with some of the most eminent dance artists at the forefront of national and international dance. These classes are aimed at professional dancers and advanced level dancers with at least 3yrs training. £10 per Master Class or book all five for £40 from 21 – 27 June.
