Fancy a night out on the town? Meet the raucous lads and lasses dancing all night and drinking till dawn. The flashing lights, the pulsating beats, the glitzy glamour and the raw energy of the dance floor. Well, York Theatre Royal would like to welcome you to a vision of stag nights and hen-do’s to drunken crying girls and gallons of booze in John Godber’s updated much loved classic comedy, Bouncers, from 12 July- 4 August.
Set in and around a northern nightclub called Mr Cinders, the action focuses on the exploits of the four doormen and their customers. The play creates a vivid picture of the relentless hedonism of northern night life with its raw energy, flashing disco lights, and raucous lads and lasses out on the town
Godber’s hilarious observation of northern night life is bursting with imagination and wit, painting a vivid picture of the disco scene and cleverly portraying recognisable characters from contemporary British culture.
Most people think the play was written about Hull, partly because it has played in the city an amazing 17 times. In fact, Bouncers was originally inspired by Kiko's in Pontefract, a Polynesian style night club with fake palm trees. "It's a celebration of the fantastic Bacchanalian aspects of urban night life. Forget 'Look Back in Anger', let's get out there - let's get pissed up," says Godber. As it says in the opening of the play, "all human life is here" - it's "a midnight circus".
Bouncers first saw light of day in August 1977 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. At that time it just had two actors in it, a 21 year old John Godber and Peter Geeves (the Orange Tango man). And the audience was just as impressive - a critic from the Scotsman and a Scottish drunk. The critic left after five minutes and the drunk stumbled on stage for a little impromptu performance of his own! But Bouncers went on to become a legend, a tour-de-force for four actors playing every character, from lager-lout to nightclub tart. The play was chosen by the National Theatre as one of the top 100 plays of the 20th century and John Godber is one of the most widely performed playwrights in the business.
The production’s excellent cast includes Matthew Rixon (Macbeth and The Three Musketeers, York Theatre Royal) as Judd; Davood Ghadami (East is East, York Theatre Royal and Spooks ) as Ralph, Andy Hockley (Robin Hood – Prince of Thieves and Macbeth, West Yorkshire Playhouse) as Lucky Eric ; and Nick Figgis (Wuthering Heights, York Theatre Royal) as Les .
Tickets for this hilarious production are priced between £9.00- £18.00, with tickets for Under 25s and Students at £5.00 and can be purchased at the York Theatre Royal Box Office or by calling 01904 623568 or visiting www.yorktheatreroyal.co.uk
