The highly acclaimed National Theatre of Scotland are set to make their debut at York Theatre Royal with their award-winning production of Anthony Neilson’s compelling and deeply moving play, The Wonderful World of Dissocia. The production’s only Yorkshire visit runs in the main house at York Theatre Royal from 22-26 May.
Lisa Jones is on a journey. It’s a colourful and exciting off-kilter trip in search of one lost hour that has tipped the balance of her life. The inhabitants of the wonderful world in which she finds herself – Dissocia – are a curious blend of the funny, the friendly and the brutal. As director and writer, Anthony Neilson himself put it, ‘If you like Alice in Wonderland but there’s not enough sex and violence in it, then Dissocia is the show for you’.
Produced originally for the 2004 Edinburgh International Festival, The Wonderful World of Dissocia wowed critics and audiences alike, picking up 5 awards at the Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland. This is a hugely original play, both magical and moving, that confirmed Anthony Neilson as one of the major voices in contemporary British Theatre. The entire original cast and creative team have been reunited for this keenly anticipated revival.
Anthony Neilson is an Artistic Associate of NTS, for whom he directed Home Edinburgh and wrote and directed Realism, in an EIF co-production this year. A creator of pioneering, taboo-breaking new work, Anthony Neilson writes and directs witty, bold and compassionate plays that explore uncharted psychological territories. Previous work includes; The Lying Kind (The Royal Court), Stitching (The Traverse, The Bush – Time Out Off-West End Award), The Censor (The Red Room at The Finborough/Royal Court - The Writers Guild Award 1997 for Best Fringe Play and The Time Out Live Award 1997), and Penetrator (Royal Court Theatre Upstairs/Traverse, Theatre/Finborough). His films have included The Debt Collector and Deeper Still.
Since the first performance in February 2006 the National Theatre of Scotland has been involved in creating 28 productions in 62 different locations. With no building of their own the company has performed in great theatres, ferries and forests, airports and tower blocks, village halls and drill halls.
Their first year on the road has established NTS as a major theatrical force with a total of 100,000 people attending their shows. There have been shows for children, shows for teenagers, musicals and European classics, produced by some of the most exciting and brilliant people working in Scotland and beyond. They have won a clutch of awards and this year took both the Edinburgh International and Fringe Festivals by storm.
“A beautiful, thought-provoking experience.”
